The Road to 2,500 TPD: Transforming the Kolpa Processing Plant

In mid2023, Kolpa embarked on one of its most ambitious technical initiatives: expanding its processing plant capacity to 2,500 tonnes per day (tpd). Mandated by Kolpa’s Board of Directors, this strategic project was designed to strengthen operational competitiveness and ensure longterm sustainability for the company.

At the core of the expansion was the implementation of a state-of-the-art comminution circuit. Upgraded primary, secondary, and tertiary crushing stages, along with a new primary grinding system, positioned Kolpa to reliably achieve the 2,500 tpd target. This modernization not only boosts production efficiency but also aligns with Kolpa’s commitment to responsible mining practices.

Modernizing the Crushing Circuit

The transformation kicked off at the end of 2023 with the replacement of an aging crusher that had previously limited plant throughput. By installing a modern cone crusher and advanced screening systems, Kolpa significantly improved the efficiency, reliability, and consistency of its crushing operations.

By the first quarter of 2024, crushed throughput increased and material sizing improved, leading to enhanced metallurgical performance. The upgraded circuit resulted in higher recoveries across key metals, including copper, lead, zinc, and silver, delivering measurable value to Kolpa’s stakeholders and supporting the company’s sustainability objectives.

A New Primary Grinding Stage

A critical component of the expansion was the addition of a new primary grinding system, featuring a 14’ x 23.5’ ball mill. Refurbished through specialized maintenance, this mill is engineered for demanding conditions and provides the grinding capacity needed to support higher throughput while maintaining process stability.

Execution Through Collaboration

The project’s success was made possible through seamless collaboration across Kolpa’s Project, Operations, Plant, and Logistics teams. From equipment identification and technical evaluation to transportation, refurbishment, installation, and commissioning, the team overcame challenges in sourcing and deploying key equipment within tight timelines and at competitive costs.

In parallel, new industrial buildings were constructed to house the Crushing and Grinding sections, supported by upgraded mineral transport, electrical, water, air, and data systems. This comprehensive phase was completed in February 2026, marking a major milestone in Kolpa’s ongoing commitment to operational excellence and sustainability.

Kolpa’s expansion is a testament to its dedication to innovation, teamwork, and sustainable growth, which are among the core principles that guide Endeavour Silver’s operations.
